The Kingdom of Bhutan is one of the most exclusive and exotic travel destinations in the world. Geographically remote, landlocked in the eastern Himalayas, this extraordinary country prides itself on its untainted cultural heritage and pristine natural beauty. This 10-day motorbiking journey takes us across 5 beautiful western districts of Bhutan, starting from Bagdogra (West Bengal) entering the south-western border town of Phuentsholing under Chukha district. We bike up to Thimphu, the only capital city in the world without traffic lights, and onward to Punakha, the old capital city which houses the "Palace of Great Happiness", crossing the beautiful Dochu La pass. We ride back across the Dochu La to Paro, which grows one of the world’s most expensive rice varieties, then to Haa the western-most district. All along this scintillating journey, we get to glimpse the modern, the ancient, the sacred and the celebratory aspects of Bhutan. Between our rides along narrow winding roads, slopes dotted with prayer flags, water-run prayer wheels and chilli fields that have never known chemical farming, we pass 2 spectacular mountain passes from where you get a glimpse of the mighty high Himalayas unscaled by humankind. Biking in the bounties of nature, we savour each breath of fresh air and serenity in wildness. We experience the warmth and authentic rural hospitality in Haa. We get to understand Bhutan’s unique development philosophy of Gross National Happiness first-hand and observe how it is practiced in daily life.
Motorbiking in Bhutan is distinctly thrilling and special. Straight motor roads are a rare sight. This journey across most of western Bhutan takes us along narrow mountain roads in varying conditions, and the ride never gets boring – beautiful landscapes soon cure us of the urge to ride hard. We kick back and savor the pure joy of cruising on our motorbikes at a relaxed 30 to 60 kph. We have time to get to know the Bhutanese countryside and its people, food, culture and nature.
